Sarasota Couples Getaway Guide: Romantic Things to Do & Where to Stay

Sarasota has a romantic quality that sneaks up on you. Maybe it is the sunsets over the Gulf, which are legitimately some of the best in the world. Maybe it is the mix of culture, great food, and gorgeous scenery that makes it easy to slow down and actually enjoy being somewhere together. Whatever it is, I have had plenty of couples stay with me over the years who arrive thinking this is just a beach trip and leave talking about when they can come back. If you are planning a Sarasota couples vacation rental, here is how to make the most of it.

Romantic Restaurants Worth the Reservation

Sarasota punches well above its weight in terms of the restaurant scene. A few spots stand out for a genuinely special dinner.

Cafe L’Europe on St. Armands Circle has been one of the most consistently romantic dining experiences in Sarasota for decades. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, the European menu is excellent, and the service feels genuinely attentive rather than rushed. Make a reservation.

Bijou Cafe in downtown Sarasota is a local institution with a menu built around fresh, seasonal ingredients and a wine list that rewards exploration. The dining room is quiet and elegant without being stiff.

Owen’s Fish Camp has a completely different vibe, rustic and warm with great Gulf seafood, and it is the kind of place where the conversation just flows. It books up fast, so plan ahead.

For something more casual, grab brunch at Mattison’s City Grille and sit outside on the main drag. The people-watching alone is worth it.

Sunset Spots You Should Not Miss

The sunsets here are the real deal. The Gulf of Mexico faces west, and on a clear evening the sky turns every shade of orange, pink, and violet over the water. Here are the best spots to catch it.

Siesta Key Beach is the most popular spot and for good reason. Watching the sun drop into the Gulf from this beach is an experience that stays with you. Bring a blanket and arrive 30 minutes before sunset to get a good spot.

South Lido Park is a quieter and arguably more beautiful option. The park sits at the southern tip of Lido Key with water on three sides, and the views at sunset are stunning without the crowd that gathers at Siesta.

Bayfront Park in downtown Sarasota gives you a sunset over the bay rather than the Gulf, which is a different but equally beautiful experience, especially with the city skyline and boat traffic in the frame.

Activities for Couples

The Ringling Museum makes for a genuinely memorable afternoon. The art collection is world-class, the mansion tour is fascinating, and the grounds along the bay are beautiful for a slow walk. It is the kind of place where couples end up talking about what they saw for the rest of the evening.

Book a sunset sailboat cruise out of Marina Jack. Several operators run two-hour cruises in the evening with wine and small bites included. It is one of the more reliably romantic ways to spend an evening in Sarasota.

Kayaking through the mangrove tunnels at Lemon Bay or Oscar Scherer State Park is a surprisingly intimate adventure. The tunnels are narrow and quiet, and navigating them together has a way of bringing people closer. Guided tours are available if you want someone to lead the way.

If you enjoy live performance, the Sarasota Opera and the Sarasota Ballet both have seasons that run through spring. Catching a performance and then heading to dinner afterward is a classic Sarasota date night.

Where to Stay

For a couples trip, I always recommend one of my two Sarasota properties depending on what kind of experience you want.

Tiffany the Tiny Home is the most popular choice for couples. It is a beautifully designed tiny house with a cozy, private feel that hotels simply cannot match. The space is intimate by design, thoughtfully furnished, and perfectly sized for two people who want to feel like they have their own little retreat. Guests consistently call it one of the most charming places they have ever stayed.

Shellmate Island offers a bit more room while still keeping that relaxed, coastal character. If you want space to spread out, cook dinner together, and settle into the Sarasota pace, this is a great option.
