Weekend in Sarasota: The Perfect 3-Day Itinerary

Three days in Sarasota is enough to get a real feel for the place, hit the best beaches, eat well, and still have time to slow down. I have been hosting guests here since 2017, and I have heard enough post-trip recaps to know what actually sticks. This itinerary skips the tourist traps and focuses on the things people come back for. Use it as a starting point and adjust for your pace.

Day 1: Arrive, Settle In, and Hit the Beach

Get settled in your rental and resist the urge to immediately fill the afternoon with activities. Take a walk around the neighborhood, pick up groceries at the Publix , and get oriented. If you arrive early enough, head straight to Siesta Key Beach for the afternoon. Arrive by 3 PM to get a good spot, stay through sunset, and let the quartz sand and calm Gulf water do their thing. It is one of the best first impressions any destination can make.

For dinner on night one, keep it easy and local. Siesta Key Village has casual options within walking distance of the beach if you do not feel like driving. Consistency favorite: Beach Cafe at Siesta Key for straightforward Gulf seafood without pretension.

If the sunset has you feeling the romance of the place, drive back through the lit-up downtown on your way back to the rental. Sarasota at night has a relaxed, low-key energy that feels different from most Florida beach towns.

Day 2: Culture, Food, and the Waterfront

Start the morning at the Saturday farmers market downtown if your trip lines up with the weekend. The market runs along Lemon Avenue and has excellent coffee, local produce, food vendors, and often live music. It is a great way to spend a couple of hours and pick up snacks for the day.

After the market (or if you miss it), head to The Ringling Museum complex. Budget two to three hours. See the art museum, walk through the grounds along the bay, and if you have kids in tow, the circus museum is a genuine delight. The mansion tour is optional but worth it if you love architecture and history.

Lunch near the museum: Head to nearby Burns Court neighborhood for one of the local cafes, or drive back toward downtown and grab a table at Mattison’s City Grille on Main Street.

Afternoon: Take a kayak tour through the mangrove tunnels at Lemon Bay or Oscar Scherer State Park. Guided options are available and recommended if you have never kayaked before. The tunnels are narrow, shaded, and full of wildlife. Birdwatchers will love it.

Evening: Make a reservation for dinner at Owen’s Fish Camp. Walk along Bayfront Park before or after dinner to catch the lit boats on the bay.

Day 3: Lido Key, St. Armands, and a Slow Exit

Save Lido Key for your last full morning. It is a slightly different beach experience than Siesta Key: wider, quieter, and connected to the beautiful South Lido Park at its southern end. Walk the park trails, take in the bay views, and watch the birds before the beach crowd arrives.

After the beach, walk up to St. Armands Circle for brunch. The Circle has been a Sarasota institution for decades, with restaurants, boutiques, and people-watching that makes it worth a couple of hours. Try Cafe L’Europe for a proper sit-down brunch, or grab something more casual at one of the outdoor spots.

If you have time before your departure, swing by Mote Marine Aquarium for a quick visit. It is small enough to do in 90 minutes and the shark touch tank is worth it. Then hit the road with a cooler full of whatever produce you picked up at the farmers market.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Sarasota traffic on Siesta Key can be slow on summer weekends. Plan beach trips before 10 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the worst of it.
  • The Legacy Trail is a 10-mile paved bike path that connects Sarasota to Venice. If you rent bikes for a day, it is one of the best ways to spend a morning.
  • Everything mentioned in this itinerary is within 20-25 minutes of central Sarasota. No long drives required.
  • Restaurant reservations are worth making, especially in season (November through April). Walk-ins are hit or miss at the popular spots.

Where to Stay for This Weekend

For a weekend in Sarasota, you want to be centrally located so nothing on this itinerary requires a long haul. Both of my properties work well.

Tiffany the Tiny Home is a beautifully designed tiny house that is perfect for one or two people who want a charming, private space. Guests always comment on how well-designed the space is and how it feels like a proper home rather than a rental.

Shellmate Island gives you a comfortable Sarasota base with easy access to everything on this list. It is a great fit for small groups or anyone who wants a bit more room.
